Community Salons and Adventures

Engage with other interesting Calgarians throughout the year by attending one of our ongoing community-based Salon events, or one of our occasional special adventures (that's the "+" part of Salons+)! 

Community Salons

Salon-based events evoke the famous salon gatherings of the 18th Century Enlightenment period, which stimulated the development and spread of many of the basic political, scientific, and social ideas that underpin our modern life (for good or bad). Our amazing team of volunteer hosts select a series of pre-recorded TEDTalks to view throughout the year, and they engage participants in a series of dynamic, structured discussion questions.

Where the topic ultimately goes is up to you, the participants! It's an excellent way to meet new people with a shared interest in ideas, and to challenge one's own viewpoints. With existing COVID-19 restrictions on in-person gatherings, our community salons are currently hosted virtually, but we hope to resume in-person events when this becomes possible from a safety standpoint.

These events are free to attend, but require online registration to ensure that we are able to accommodate the group size, and to ensure that we can send participants a post-event feedback form. Please note that these community salon events DO NOT feature live speakers unless specifically noted (see more about those events further down the page).
 

Special TEDxCalgary Adventures

From time to time, we get the opportunity to visit some special places that normally are a bit off the beaten path. Sometimes it's joining others to take a special art-focused walk around our city, or explore a particular neighbourhood. Other times, it's a chance to go behind the scenes with a particular lab (think robotics, or advanced data visualization) or an interesting organization (like a gelato factory!). Some are just outright experimental, so join us for the fun of making the "x" in TEDxCalgary stand for something different each time!
 
When running, our TEDxCalgary Adventures will be listed under the community salons area (and possibly under events, depending on how they're structured).

Join us at The Ampersand, a beautiful reimagining of an iconic Calgary downtown building in the traditional arc drawn by the Bow and Elbow rivers. Get your seat on the grand social stairs, or in our special seating zone down front close to the speakers!

All interactions and refreshment breaks will be within the space, or in the adjacent park spaces if weather permits.

Paid parking in the Harmony Parkade (formerly James Short) across the street (Plus 15 accessible)

How do I register for an event?

When we have an active event (either in-person or virtual), registration links will be provided in our Events section. 

When do you announce all the speakers?

Speakers for upcoming events are usually announced about 4 weeks in advance of the event. Please note that all events are "as is", and we cannot guarantee that a particular speaker is able to appear.

What goes on at a TEDxCalgary event?

Compared to watching an individual TED or TEDx talk online, a TEDxCalgary event is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a full day of ideas and conversations with others who are equally curious about the world around them. In addition to the amazing speakers and performers we profile on stage, all of our participants at the event contribute to the awesomeness of the day through their interactions with one another, and with our interactions partners in the venue. As part of your ticket, we provide refreshment and meal breaks throughout the day to nourish the body as well as the mind! What is your affiliation with TED?

We are an independently organized TEDx event, operating under licence from TED. We do not speak for the TED organization, and our event is required to conform with a number of TEDx licencing provisions. Please seethe TEDx site for more information .

Are there other TEDx organizing teams in Calgary?

Yes! We're fortunate to have several other TEDx licencees in the city, including our colleagues atTEDxYYC who also started operating in 2009. Each TEDx team brings a different approach to organizing their event, while conforming to the general TEDx licencing rules.

Can I nominate a speaker?

Yes! We accept nominations year-round, versus on an event basis. Please see our Become a Speaker page for general information on how to nominate someone to be a speaker.
